Side sleeping creates a larger gap between the head and mattress than back or stomach sleeping. The pillow’s job is to fill that space comfortably so the head does not drop toward the mattress or tilt upward.
Measure the gap, not just the pillow
Broad shoulders and a firm mattress often require more pillow height because the shoulder stays higher. A softer mattress allows the shoulder to sink, reducing the gap. The pillow also compresses under the head, so its uncompressed measurement does not tell the full story.
Look for stable, adjustable support
An adjustable layered pillow makes it easier to test several heights at home. A hybrid or mouldable fill can be shaped under the neck while remaining softer around the face. The right choice should feel supportive without creating a hard pressure point at the ear or jaw.
Check your position in the morning
Notice whether you repeatedly place an arm under the pillow, fold the pillow in half or wake with the head tilted. Those habits can indicate insufficient height or support. Adjust one layer at a time and allow a few nights before making another change.
